25 | A Little More About David, and the Odaffer Name
David died in Jacksonville in 1918 and is buried in the East Cemetary in Jacksonville, Illinois. As his death certificate says, David died of chronic nephritis and exhaustion.
In all, David sired 15 children, the youngest when he was 33 years old, and the oldest when he was 61. I can see why there would be some exhaustion associated with this feat.
It is interesting to note that Odaffer is spelled three different ways on David’s death certificate- O’Daffer, O’daffer, and Odaffer. I think it was around this period of time that David’s first son John, and other Decatur Odaffers began spelling with an apostrophe and a capital D, probably picked up from the John B. O’Daffer branch. Others in the immediate family noticed this, and many seemed to have adopted this spelling.
On the next page we will give a chart that summarizes the male descendants of Johann Wolfgang Odoerfer who have the last name Odaffer.
